If you like sci-fi _and_ like humor, you definitely should READ the books.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the best parody in this universe.
And in tenths of other universes as well.
The TV show was for earthlings without imagination... as most TV shows.

Not as good as the first two books, that were based on the BBC radio series.
Real purists go for the radio transscripts book.
The chapters were weekly programs, without a thought out plan, so that's the
reason for the very wierd chapter endings and beginnings.
Douglas Adams wrote also the equal good non scifi Dirk Gently books.
Maybe I will look for some scenes to do in Lightwave, a lot of planet- and
stardestruction and time/space warps will do, also the fastest spaceship ever.
